From Humble Beginnings to Global Stage: How JZyNo’s Joy and Jackie Russ’s Direction Redefine Liberian Music Videos

Even after reflecting on this repeatedly, I can hardly believe this project is Liberian-made. My first instinct was to think the artist must be Nigerian and that the video was directed by someone like Clarence Peters or TG Omori. But, surprisingly, it’s not.

From the moment JZyNo released Joy as part of his Liberian Boy EP, I felt an instant chill listening to the track. I was 100% confident it had the potential to stand out. Set against a catchy Afrobeat rhythm and charged with powerful lyrics, Joy quickly became a fan favorite and it’s easy to see why.

Honestly, trusting Jackie Russ with this project was no mistake. He delivered with such precision and creativity that you’ll find yourself replaying the video with a smile on your face. That’s exactly what happened to me; the Joy music video left me feeling butterflies, too much to keep to myself. I had to share the link with a friend, saying, “I don’t want you to miss out on this before I get arrested!” (smile)

I love how Jackie Russ carefully brought each element of the video to life, connecting it perfectly to the song’s meaning. There’s an intimacy in how Jackie portrays JZyNo’s journey from his humble past to the man he has become. He went from a boy who no one believed could change the narrative of Liberian music to a face among those putting Liberian sounds on the global stage. Even without a complex storyline, the visuals alone communicate a powerful narrative of growth, resilience, and freedom. Each location in the video, from open fields to crowded markets and sunlit corners, reflects a theme of liberation and shared joy.

Joy has quickly become an anthem, and this music video is a testament to the strength of Liberian talent. Jackie Russ and JZyNo prove that Liberia’s creative scene is vibrant and ready for the global spotlight. Together, they’ve created something that doesn’t just entertain; it inspires.
