Back in 2014, while working on a school project, I had a spark of inspiration: why not create something that could put Liberian music on the map? The idea was simple but powerful, a music web portal where the world could stream, download, and celebrate the incredible talent of Liberian artists. But looking back, I’ve realized it wasn’t about the artists, it was about us all. It was about sharing the heartbeat of Liberia with the world, one song at a time. Today, that dream is alive and thriving, evolving with the times but staying true to its core mission: taking Liberian music to heights it’s never reached before.
A few years ago, I saw that same passion mirrored in a young, determined Liberian artist named Steve Mathiaus Tamba Yalipa, better known by his stage name Yo B. From the moment we spoke, I could feel his passion for music. He told me about his struggles, how hard it was to get people to notice his talent, and how much he believed in his dream despite the challenges. As he spoke, I saw a reflection of myself—full of fire, chasing a vision, and determined to make a difference. What struck me most wasn’t just his words, though; it was his presence. Yo B had this energy, this undeniable charm in his voice, the kind of voice that could stop you in your tracks and make you feel something. I remember thinking, "This guy’s voice is dangerous, it’s the kind you don’t want your partner to hear, or they might just fall for him!" (Smile.) But beyond the charm, Yo B had something rare: the grit and heart to make his dreams a reality. From that day, I knew he was destined to leave a mark on Liberian music, and I couldn’t wait to see it happen.
As an independent artist, Yo B has redefined what it means to thrive in the music industry. He’s proven that you don’t need millions to leave a lasting impression. What you need is a burning passion, relentless drive, and the ability to connect with your audience in meaningful ways. Whether it’s through heartfelt performances or genuine interactions, Yo B has crossed boundaries, building real connections that inspire others to follow in his footsteps.
